Major scales and solfa notes

 MAJOR SCALE

In music , we have different scales: major scale, minor scale, chromatic scale etc. However, in this post, we are going to look into the major scale. A scale is a sequence of notes. For example : do ri mi fa soh la ti do   is a scale. The major scale has seven distinct notes . For example, C major scale is C D E F G A B C ( the last 'C' note is the octave of the first). We have twelve major scales  in music (from the twelve notes in music). The major scale is basically ' do ri mi fa soh la ti do' in solfa notation.

C major scale: C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C   ( do ri mi fa soh la ti do)

G major scale : G  A  B  C  D  E  F#  G

D major scale  : D  E  F#  G  A  B  C# D

The major scale has  a formula but It won't be included this post. Check simplifying theory for more details

It important to learn all the major scales as a musician.

SOLFA NOTES

What is solfa?  Solfa ( tonic solfa) is a method of learning and reading music. It  uses seven symbols for the scale ( major scale): do, re, mi, fa, soh, la, ti ( d r m f s l t). The solfa method is simple. Understanding it, is an asset for a singer or an instrumentalist.

SOLFA NOTES IN MAJOR SCALE

The notes in C major scale are: C D E F G A B C
The solfa notes for the C major scale are:
C : do
D:  re
E : mi
F:  fa
G:  la
A:. Soh
B : ti
C:   do ( the octave)

Similarly, the solfa notes for the other major scales like G major scale, A major scale   is the same. ( d r m f s l t d). In this blog,  the symbols d, t, l, s, f, m, r, d  r m  f  s l  t d' r' m' f' l' t' will be used to represent notes.  d' means the higher octave of 'd'(do), r'  means the octave of  'r'(ray), likewise the m'  and so on.  Also, the d,(for with a comma) is lower octave from the reference 'do' note. Similarly, the m, is the lower octave 'm' for the 'mi' note. It may look confusing at first but you will grasp the concept sooner or later. Some songs basically used :  d r m f s l t ( one octave range). However,  the (r' f' or m, f,   etc) will be used to represent notes of songs within  two or three octave range. The beats (:, :-,   e t c) of the notes will not be included in this blog.

SOLFA NOTES IN MINOR SCALES

The solfa notes in minor scale is basically the same with the solfa notes in the major scale. The minor scale start from the 'la' note. That is : la ti do re mi fa soh la ( l t d r m f s l)

Understanding of the solfas notation is an asset to a musician. In most of the songs in this blog ,
the solfa notes are also included. Example is Micheal W Smith : Here I am to worship

God bless you.

Playing a melody by ear part 1

Hello!  Anybody can play a melody  by ear.  For instance, to play a melody by ear with the guitar,  first, you should know how to play the musical scales mostly the major scale and the minor scale. Many songs are basically from a major scale or minor scale. For example, the G major scale is G A B C D F# G which is : do ri me fa so la to do in solfa notation. Secondly, listen to the song very well  . Thirdly, hum the song. Finally, begin to find the notes of the song from the major or minor scale on the instrument. You can start from the 'do' note or the 'soh' note or 'mi' note of the major scale. Most songs begin with the 'do' note.   For starters, (don't laugh) begin with simple melodies like twinkle twinkle little star, Mary had a little lamb, Trust and Obey (hymn), Here I am to worship by Micheal W Smith . Somebody once said :  "a journey of  a thousand miles begins with a step". Have fun!  Playing by ear part 2. If  you a...
